But what did LGBTQ people have to go through to get to this point? In this article, RHINOSHIELD will take you to see the journey that led to Pride Month as we know it today, including the meaning of various symbols involved in order to support gender equality and celebrate LGBTQ Month.
The beginning of Pride Month before the 2024 Pride Month event
Until it became the pride month of LGBTQ people like today, until the organization of Pride Month 2024, the beginning happened in the 1960s, which was an era when society did not accept and did not support gender equality . People with diverse genders at that time were seen as freaks or bad people. Therefore, there was discrimination against people with diverse genders. Some people were even kicked out of their homes. And because of this discrimination, people with diverse genders had to hide their identities to prevent dangers that might happen to them.
The only safe place is the “gay bar”, which is a place to socialize, talk, exchange, and also a place to stay for those who have been evicted from their homes. Due to the situation of discrimination against LGBTQ people, gay bars are still illegal and more illegal gay bars have opened.
On June 28, 1969, police arrested customers at the Stonewall Inn in the United States. They initially intended to search for illegal items, but instead found that the bar was a meeting place for LGBTQ people. The police arrested them, treated them with contempt, and bullied them until they were humiliated. Then, they threw things at the police and rioted.
That event became the starting point for LGBTQ people to come out and move to demand rights, equality, and fight for freedom of expression, using the name "Gay Parade". After that, there was a commemorative parade, resulting in the Pride Month Festival in June of every year to commemorate the event and demand rights and equality for LGBTQ people and show the pride of LGBTQ people who have fought together until today.
What does the "Rainbow Flag", a symbol of Pride Month, mean?
Before the rainbow flag had 6 colors as we see and used as a symbol for Pride Month , there were 8 colors in the past, which were designed by American artist and gay rights activist Gilbert Baker in 1978, who was inspired by the flag of the United States on the occasion of the 200th anniversary in 1976. Each color has the following meanings:

◾ Orange means healing.
◾ Yellow means bright sunlight.
◾ Green means nature.
◾ Purple-blue means harmony and unity.
◾ Purple represents the spirit of LGBTQ.
◾ Hot Pink color has a sexual meaning.
◾ Turquoise means magic.
Two colours were removed from the rainbow flag, Hot Pink and Turquoise, as they are special colours that are difficult to produce. Even though there are only 6 colours left, the meaning of each colour remains the same. ◾ B – Bisexual : A person who has a taste can like both men and women.

◾ Q – Queer : A group of people who are sexually fluid and do not define what gender they like.

◾ I – Intersex : People who are born without a clear gender identity. They may be born with reproductive organs of both sexes or have abnormal amounts of hormones or sex chromosomes.
◾ A – Asexual : A group of people who do not feel sexually attracted to others.

◾ + : This is a symbol used to represent other gender diversity groups that are not yet specified in the acronym.
If the above definitions do not meet your needs, that's okay, because these literal definitions are just symbols used to express yourself. We do not have to define ourselves in any way, but if we understand ourselves, that is enough.

Bangkok Pride Festival 2024
Bangkok and Naruemit Pride are organizing the Bangkok Pride Festival 2024 to celebrate Pride Month 2024 under the theme Celebration of Love as a countdown to the adoption of marriage equality laws before the end of 2024. The event will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2024 from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. There will be a parade on Rama I Road, starting from the Suphachalasai National Stadium, the plaza in front of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, Siam Discovery Shopping Mall, Siam Center, Siam Paragon, Wat Pathum Wanaram, and ending at Ratchaprasong Intersection in front of Central World Shopping Mall.
